About

At the RCVLab, we develop novel state-of-the-art computer vision methods, with applications in robotics and intelligent systems. Founded is 2001 under the direction of Prof. Michael Greenspan, our expertise includes both theory-driven (classically based) and data-driven (machine learning based)
computer vision methods, with the most interesting results often lying in the merger of both approaches.

We work closely with industry, and most of our projects are collaborative. Addressing the application needs of our partners allows us to apply existing cutting-edge methods to solve real world problems, and often challenges us to extend our knowledge and develop new approaches. Our most novel discoveries, and ultimately
academic contributions,
have been the direct result of thinking differently about a problem posed by our industrial partners.

The lab itself is located on the 7th floor of Walter Light Hall, within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Our facilities and equipment changes over time, as new projects emerge and as technology advances. At any given time, our equipment includes a large collection of cameras (mostly PointGrey) and range sensors (Microsoft Kinect, Intel RealSense, Zivid), data projectors, and robotic manipulators. For machine learning, we have access to a number of different GPU clusters (Ingenuity Labs, Center for Advanced Computing), as well as our own in-house systems. Each student also has a dedicated GPU on their workstation for development purposes.

The culture of the lab is friendly and supportive. We comprise a diverse set of international students from different backgrounds, including recently Iran, China, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, as well as domestic Canadian students. The common thread that brings us together is our fascination with the technology. We have weekly lab meetings where we share progress and discuss issues, and also have weekly focussed team meetings, as well as asynchronous smaller group or individual meetings as needed.
